What is Moissanite
Moissanite is the name given to a naturally occurring and laboratory-grown mineral made up of silicon carbide. Its occurrence in nature is extremely rare and has only been found in upper mantle rock and meteorites. Moissanite is also one of the hardest and toughest known elements on earth, making it extremely resistant to scratching, chipping and breaking. Its durability and incomparable beauty make it an ideal center stone for an engagement ring or jewelry gift. Because of its durability, moissanite can be found in a variety of cuts, which give jewelry designers a plethora of options for settings.
One quality Moissanite is adored for is its ability to radiate color under any light. Moissanites have a high refractive index in which they refract light very well. Moissanite’s Brilliance Refractive Index is anywhere between a 2.65-2.69, and a diamond is a 2.42. Fire dispersion is a factor as well, and a Moissanite’s fire dispersion is higher than a diamond as well. Therefore many would say Moissanites appear more brilliant than a diamond.
